Being Christian, Being Simple, Being Green

Many Christians are experiencing a reawakening to the beauty of the natural world, and the challenges we face as we try to be good stewards of the gifts of the created order. Find below a few books I’ve found useful as I explore this topic.

Prayer and Spiritual Formation

Tickle’s hourly prayer manuals are an excellent resource. If you’re not ready to buy three hardcover volumes to check them out, try purchasing the smaller paperbacks for Advent and Lent.

  • Tickle, Phyllis: The Divine Hours : Prayers for Summertime–A Manual for Prayer, Volume 1, Doubleday, 2000. ISBN 0385492863. [amazon]
  • Tickle, Phyllis: The Divine Hours : Prayers for Wintertime–A Manual for Prayer, Volume 2, Doubleday, 2000. ISBN 0385492863. [amazon]
  • Tickle, Phyllis: The Divine Hours : Prayers for Springtime–A Manual for Prayer, Volume 3, Doubleday, 2001. ISBN 038549758X. [amazon]
  • Tickle, Phyllis: Christmastide : Prayers for Advent Through Epiphany from The Divine Hours , Galilee Trade, 2003. ISBN 0385510268. [amazon]
  • Tickle, Phyllis: Eastertide : Prayers for Lent Through Easter from The Divine Hours , Galilee Trade, 2004. ISBN 0385511280. [amazon]

Our Built Environment

Culinary Spirituality

  • Capon, Robert Farrar: The Supper of the Lamb: A Culinary Reflection, Modern Food Library, 2002. ISBN 0375760563. [amazon][bc review]

Marriage

Yes, you are hearing this from me…

  • Gottman, John M. and Nan Silver: Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, Random House, New York, 1999. ISBN 0609805797. [amazon][author’s page]
This book is remarkably pragmatic, despite it’s “help us help you” title, and worth a (critical) read.

Cooking

You may find other things in my collection on LibraryThing.

  • McGee, Harold: On Food and Cooking: Science and Lore of the Kitchen [NPR Review][a]
  • Barham, Peter: The Science of Cooking [a]

Things Technical or… “Para”-technical

Math, Physics, Science, etc… which is surprisingly unboring.

  • Wallace, David Foster: Infinity and More: A Compact History of Infinity[a

Other Stuff

Things I can’t, won’t or simply haven’t categorized.
