Just a post to note that I’ve put up a dedicated page here to provide links, context, critical reviews, and other resources associated with the Living the Questions curriculum. Please comment on this post or the linked page if you can offer corrections, improved links, or any other critique. –JA

interesting new site features

Filed under: personal — andersoj @ 7:56 pm

I wanted to call your attention to a few features I’ve been playing with on this site. The first thing to note is the partial integration of my del.icio.us links with the blog site. You can jump to the full interface here. I’ve also introduced a cached copy in the “pages” section of the sidebar. This allows me to maintain a local copy of these links in the event that the del.icio.us server goes down, and it helps reduce load on the server. I’d be pleased to hear if anyone else has a del.icio.us account…

I have also provided a link to my tribe.net profile in the “andersoj stuff” section of the sidebar. This is an interesting social networking project that you might enjoy visiting. If you’d like a tribe.net invitation, please let meknow.

Another interesting feature is the geourl link, which provides a database of web services organized geographically. Have a look at the geourl site to see how your web services could participate. The link from here will show you, for instance, what web services claim to be located near our home in Blacksburg, VA.

Renewed interest in secure email has encouraged me to make my GnuPG key available. See the page called communicating-with-jonathan for my public key and links to related resources. An S/MIME key is also available upon request.

I have also registered this site with a few blog search services. For instance, google’s blogsearch service now indexes the stories on this site, and you can follow links between this blog and others by looking at technorati.

As a part of BPC’s Peacemaking Sunday events, Professor Rolston will be delivering the sermon as well as joining in a variety of less formal discussions. The theme will be Christian engagement with environmental challenges.

Economist: Namibia’s Donkeys

Filed under: creationcare — andersoj @ 6:48 pm

I was quite taken with the little sidebar in this week’s Economist:

…When cruising along Namibia’s long and empty roads, unsuspecting drivers face a no less dangerous hazard: sleeping donkeys. At night, the warm tarmac provides a much more comfortable bed than the vast expanses of land only a few yards away. Invisible in the darkm the dormant asses, which help plough Namibia’s land and pull its carts, have become a cause of many a car crash…In May, the head of the president’s guard was killed–by a donkey.

The article goes on to discuss what sounds like some kind of British non-profit organization which has been formed for the purpose of making the “donkeys glow by attaching reflective tags to their ears.”

All I can say is, “wow.” For those of you with an Economist subsctription, you can read the article here. –JA

MHAJ: Eugene Peterson

Filed under: church — andersoj @ 4:00 pm

Mars Hill Audio Journal has posted an interview with Eugene Peterson in its entirety on the web. Please have a listen, and if you like it, subscribe ! MHAJ has been a pleasure for me for the past several years, and I’d love for others to enjoy it as well.

A representative snippet:

EP: You know, it seems to me that the Christian congregation… the church, the local church, is the one island or conclave of orality, that this is where voices can be heard, in their natural settings. And we live in a culture where so much is done through media, and then in the the workplace it is all functional, we’ve got to do a job. The congregation is one place where you can be listened to. And so, not just memorizing poetry, but learning to listen to cadence and rhythm and metaphors that people come up with…

… and those of us who are Christians, we’re in a world which is defined by the (W)word, and words are very important to us. And I want to give them dignity, or attention… just paying attention to them.

And later…

EP: The word ‘idolatry’ is not very useful anymore … [it] conjures up Pagan idols, figurines, and things. The genius of the idol is that it puts you in control. We have this enormous emphasis in our culture of being in control, being able to choose, making our own decisions. But the fact is that most of life is given to us, we don’t create it, we don’t control it. The weather, much of what happens in our own bodies, the time that’s given to us, language. So if we don’t learn this ‘fear of the Lord’ receptivity, which is I’d say our receptivity accompanied by a sense of mystery, and not wanting, caring, about being in control, we miss out on so much. We miss out on the gifts that are all around us. It’s awfully easy for the Church, for religion, to provide techniques for control… much of religion is simply that: a way to get control…

See also Peterson’s recent book, Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places, reviewed also in Books & Culture (at some point, this B&C link will become subscribers-only). The publisher, Eerdmans, has a transcript of a short interview up on their page. –JA

Living the Questions Study

Filed under: church, creationcare, bpc, ltq — andersoj @ 1:10 pm

I have been participating for the past few weeks in a Monday-afternoon study group at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. The group is using a curriculum called “Living the Questions,” a multi-media curriculum developed by two self-described “progressive ministers” in the United Methodist Church, Jeff Procter-Murphy and David Felten.
