US DoD BRAC Process “Benefits” Hanscom AFB

Filed under: mitre — andersoj @ 12:30 pm

The Pentagon today announced their plans for the 2005 round of Base Reallocation and Closure (BRAC), the details of which have been anxiously anticipated in the communities around Hanscom Air Force Base (HAFB) and around the continental US. The Boston Globe coverage… has a hasty analysis of the impact on New England, including some optimism about the plan to beef up (rather than shut down) the operations at HAFB. Not sure how I feel about this, but certainly folks at MITRE and Hanscom see this as a win. Oh, some of you may not know that MIT Lincoln Laboratory is located on the grounds of Hanscom.

It should be noted that this list is not the end of the story… a baroque series of beaurocratic gymnastics involving Congress and the Bush Administration remain before any of these plans are implemented. Details on the DefenseLink BRAC site, commentary and archives over at globalsecurity.org, and if you really like dull television, CSPAN has video coverage of the press briefings from the last week.
